In just a few days Winter will end and Spring will begin. But here in Arizona we are already seeing above average temperatures, so imagine what Summer may bring.
The hot dry climate here can easily cause the family pet to become over heated and dehydrated. As responsible pet owners it is important to take steps to make sure that all pets are kept hydrated and cool.
If your pet needs to be outside during the heat of the summer, make sure they have access to fresh water. Their bowl will need to have fresh water added to it several times of day. Also, make sure that there is several bowls placed in shady areas. If the only water bowl gets kicked over, your pet will be without water.
Place large ice cubes in the bowls to help keep the water cool. Some pet owners use automatic water refill systems to guarantee that their pets always have fresh water.
Even when pets are kept inside, they can also become dehydrated. Consider placing more than one water bowl throughout the house to encourage drinking. Ice cubes and clean bowls may also help to encourage your pet to drink more.
Get the pet to drink
If you find that your pet is not drinking enough water, there are some tricks that you can try. The first trick is to put a treat in a bowl and cover it with water. This way your pet will drink some water in order to get the treat.
Allow your pet to drink from a hose. Consider getting a small plastic tub for your pet. Not only will they drink the water and have fun too.
Symptoms of dehydration in dogs include sunken eyes, lethargy, loss of appetite, dry mouth, gray gums. If you suspect that your dog may be dehydrated, take them to a veterinarian immediately and remember that the Scottsdale veterinarians at Horizon Animal Hospital are always here to provide a diagnosis and treatment.
