You’re going out of town and you can’t take your beloved pooch with you. The thought of leaving your dog behind may be stressful for you, but you can rest assured that the vet clinic staff will take good care of him or her. Whether this is your first time boarding your dog or you’ve already done it a few times, there are a few things you can do to prepare both of you.
Bring your dog in for a tour.
Ask the boarding facility if you can take your pup there for a tour. Both of you can meet the staff, check out the exercise yard, and get a look at the layout of the kennels. This will help ease your dog’s anxiety, as he or she will become familiar with the new surroundings ahead of time. It’ll also mitigate any anxiety you may be feeling, as you’ll get to know the caregivers and see how they interact with your dog.
Ask about your dog’s food.
While you’re at the boarding facility, ask if they have your dog’s brand of food on hand. If not, you’ll want to send food with him or her. Abruptly switching to a new brand of food can spell trouble for your dog’s tummy. Be sure to write down the instructions for feeding your dog. You might also want to send along your pup’s favorite treats.
Bring comforting items.
When the big day arrives, you should head over to the boarding facility with your dog’s favorite comfort items. Your dog will appreciate having a bed that smells like home. If your dog’s bed will take up too much space in the kennel, bring a fluffy blanket or even one of your old T-shirts. As long as it smells like you, your dog will love it. Don’t forget to pack a toy or two, as well!
