There is no question that pets are important parts of the lives of the families they join, but that doesn’t mean that every family needs a pet in the house. For all of the joy that pets bring, they also require a significant amount of care. The additional responsibility and expense of bringing a pet into your family isn’t something you should take lightly. It’s essential to consider all aspects of having a pet, including the vet care, grooming, and daily attention that animals need. How do you know your family is ready to get a pet? Here are some signs that now is the right time to add a four-legged family member to your household.
You’ve done your homework.
Before you get a pet, it’s important to research different pets to find the one that’s right for you. For instance, if you’re thinking of getting a dog, researching kid-friendly breeds is a good start. When you’re considering a pet, be sure to also research things like common medical issues, grooming needs, and exercise needs of the animals you’re interested in, so that you know exactly what to expect.
Your schedule and finances are ready.
Take a long, hard look at your family’s schedule. Are you able to be around to meet the needs of your pet, in terms of feeding, walking, and companionship? Every pet has daily necessities that you will have to provide, but on top of that, pets need to spend time with their people. Be sure your family isn’t too busy to make that time. Additionally, pets bring added expenses. Make certain that you have room in your budget for pet food, grooming, vet visits, and more.
You’ve considered the future.
Even if you think your family is ready right now, what do expect the next 10-20 years to hold? If you think your living situation could change dramatically, that you may move into a career that demands much more of your time, or that age may become a factor in caring for a pet, decide how you will navigate those changes before heading to the animal shelter.
