A new kitten is an exciting and lovable addition to your family. However, like human babies, kittens can be rambunctious, curious, and even a little clumsy. In addition to scheduling your kitten’s first veterinary checkup, there are a few steps you can take before your kitten arrives home to make sure he gets a healthy start in life.
Set Up a Pet Room
Any new pet can quickly feel overwhelmed when faced with a large new space to learn. Before you bring your kitten home, set up a single small room, such as a bedroom or bathroom, with everything your kitten will need. This should include a soft bed, a litter box, and clean bowls for food and water. When your kitten first arrives home, keep him confined to this room for one to two days before slowly acquainting him with the rest of your home. While it’s certainly tempting to let your kitten explore every nook and cranny as soon as he arrives, keeping him confined to smaller spaces early on will reduce anxiety and ensure he can always find his food, water, and litter.
Kitten-Proof Your Home
The average home can pose several health and safety concerns for kittens, who are curious and unsure of their limits. You can take steps to kitten-proof your home by tying away any window treatment cords and bundling power cables and wires using a cable tie. Additionally, you should keep hair ties, rubber bands, strings, and other small items that a kitten may swallow in drawers or cabinets for your pet’s safety, and check your houseplants to ensure they aren’t toxic to cats.
